White Rose Movement - Girls In The Back

Kane Fulton

Synthelicious is a word which should be coined purely for the ear candy created by White Rose Movement. Hordes of modern day indie bands are exploiting the synthesizer, but rarely does a band use one and it feels so....right. The White Rose Movement do. Perhaps it's because they clearly revel in the period of music that they so passionately emulate. Ok, so the fashion side of the band is somewhat gimmicky, and conjures suspicions of backstage stylists (perhaps this song is homage to them? No, actually, probably not..), but whether they bleach their own hair and pick their own clothing is beside the point, because the music on offer here is nothing short of sickeningly danceable.

The track kicks off with a minimalist 4/4 drum beat with some lashings of synchronised bass and synth. Finns vocals come in as sharp as the accompanying guitar stabs, "Fighting. Feeling like I'm whiting. Modern times." Lesser bands making a track like this might easily get carried away with the beeps and the dissonant distorted guitar licks, but just like their image, White Rose Movement always seem to keep the sound clean and free of confusion. Mr Epworth business as usual, then. When the chorus kicks in, it kicks in like a Chuck Norris roundhouse to the temple. "Girls in the back get higher, higher!" squeals Jasper, Taxxi and Owen. Whilst Owen frantically plucks octaves, Jaspers spiky guitar slides down the neck in syncopation with Finns reemerged vocals. Just when you think that the chorus is going to be the star of the show, the next verse kicks in with the addition of an arpeggiated, Taxxified™ synth line. If your legs aren't voluntarily (or involuntarily) moving by now, you probably don't have any. Straight after another chorus and we're onto the home stretch. Everything is slowed down and stretched out, and it seems we're finally given a chance to get our breath back.

Three minutes and thirty five seconds of pure pop bliss. Stop. Find some yellow wellies. Dye your hair blonde. Hit repeat. Do it all again. You are the coolest and you want everyone to know it.
