It’s
always the quiet ones you have to be careful of, and The Rakes
are no different. They originated from the London scene that
brought us bands such as The Libertines and The Others.. Whilst
these bands focused heavily on the jagged and raw sound of bands
such as The Sex Pistols and The Clash, The Rakes sound is much
more angular and in debt to bands such Wire and Gang of Four.
This track is taken from the re-release of
their debut album Capture/Release, and it’s a dashing slice of
dance-infused indie-rock. The track starts off with a 4/4 beat
and some keyboard sounding guitar stabs, before Alan’s desperate
vocals enter, “This distance we have come/ Has got me pining/
For a touch once familiar and exciting”. It builds slowly
with more guitars being added before breaking down into a
chorus, which is a typical 'Rakesesque' que to make everyone
burst into possessed Ian Curtis-style dancing.
The track climaxes with a chorus that’s
reminiscent of The Cribs track 'Martell', with its football
crowd style chant. “All Too Human” is very much in the same vein
as tracks such as “Retreat” and “Terror!”, and whilst old fans
of the band will be not be disappointed, it may just as well win
them some new ones.
