In a dark, dingy club in Bristol, a
packed out crowd waits patiently for The Gift's new line-up to
reveal themselves. The dingy club, of course, is the Louisiana
in Bristol, host to many a band passing through this humble Avon
town.
I must admit I had my doubts before I arrived. I had heard some
rough mixes of their new EP, and despite having some good tunes,
nothing stood out to me. However, seeing them live was a
completely different experience. Being the only band from the
night to have a song I genuinely love and have been listening to
over and over (check out 'Shake It' on their myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/thegiftbristol), their high
power, catchy, PJ Harvey-esque rock even contained hints of Iggy
and The Stooges. They were definitely a refreshing change from
'the norm'. Talking of 'the norm', that is exactly what came to
mind when I watched the next band, Brandon Steep.
Post-gig, having now listened to their EP (which sounds nothing
like they do live) I have decided that the band definitely do
have talent. If they weren't so intent on trying to be The
Editors, they would be great. Whilst their musicianship was
excellent, nothing really grabbed me. I think this band have so
much potential, but just need a kick in the right direction.
Headlining the night were Kortez. Sporting matching tops marked
'Guitar', 'Bass' and 'Drums' it became clear that cliché was the
theme of the night. Again, I have no doubt that these guys could
play, and the vocalist has a fantastic voice. The three brothers
seem to drift in and out from Incubus to 3 doors down, which
isn't necessarily a band thing. The thing that really made this
band though, is the front man. Nick Kortez banters well with the
crowd, and they respond well. Kortez are a fun band that don't
take themselves too seriously. Thumbs up from me.
